Migrating workloads to the cloud can be a complex and challenging endeavor, especially when dealing with large-scale applications. AWS provides a set of powerful tools and services to simplify this process, and AWS Migration Hub and AWS Application Discovery Service are key components of this migration journey.
What Is AWS Migration Hub?
AWS Migration Hub provides a single location to track the progress of application migrations across multiple AWS and partner solutions. It gives you visibility into your migration portfolio and helps you choose the migration tools that best fit your needs.
Key capabilities include:
- Centralized tracking — Monitor migration status across all your workloads from a single dashboard
- Tool integration — Works with AWS Application Migration Service (MGN), AWS Database Migration Service (DMS), and partner tools
- Progress visualization — See which servers are discovered, in migration, and completed
AWS Application Discovery Service
Before you can migrate, you need to understand what you have. AWS Application Discovery Service helps you plan migration projects by gathering information about your on-premises data centers.
It offers two discovery modes:
Agentless Discovery uses the AWS Agentless Discovery Connector — a VMware appliance — to collect VM inventory, configuration, and performance data without installing agents on each server.
Agent-Based Discovery installs the AWS Application Discovery Agent on each server to collect detailed system configuration, performance, network connections, and running processes.
Building Your Migration Plan
With discovery data in hand, the migration planning process becomes significantly more structured:
- Dependency mapping — Identify which servers communicate with each other to group them into migration waves
- Right-sizing — Use performance data to select appropriately sized EC2 instances
- Wave planning — Sequence migrations to minimize risk and downtime
- Tool selection — Choose between lift-and-shift (MGN), re-platform, or re-architect based on each workload
Executing the Migration
Once your plan is in place, AWS Migration Hub tracks progress as you execute. Each server moves through discovery → not started → in progress → migrated states, giving your team and stakeholders real-time visibility.
